Liverpool have been dealt a blow in the transfer market, with reports from the Express suggesting that the agent of Barcelona right back Dani Alves has confirmed that the Brazil international will be staying at the Nou Camp.

The Reds had been linked with a move to bring the experienced attacking full back to Anfield this summer, with Barca reportedly interested in replacing the former Sevilla man with a young, fresher player – potentially Fiorentina star Juan Cuadrado.

It seems as though Alves will be staying at the Nou Camp, however, which leave Glen Johnson and young duo Jon Flanagan and Javier Manquillo to battle it out for the right back position in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Alves will be looking to get back to his best form for Luis Enrique this season after a frustrating 2013/14 campaign which culminated in a disappointing campaign with Brazil at the World Cup.

Liverpool, meanwhile, saw right back emerge as one of their problem positions, with England international Glen Johnson often criticised for his lack of defensive work throughout the season – meaning that it could be youngster Flanagan who takes to the field for the Reds’ opening Premier League match of the season against Southampton on Sunday afternoon.
