Manchester United are still hoping to sign defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon, with the Express reporting that manager Louis van Gaal has made a personal phone call to the Argentine international reassuring him that the move is still on.

United have been linked with a move for the impressive full back in recent days, and things may have become more urgent for van Gaal after his side were ruthlessly exposed by Swansea City in their opening Premier League game at Old Trafford this afteroon.

Rojo’s versatility will also be of use to van Gaal, with the former Spartak Moscow player also capable of filling in at centre back in the Dutchman’s 3-4-1-2 system.

The transfer seemed to have hit a snag in recent days, however, due to the fact that Sporting only own a small proportion of the rights to the player, with the majority controlled by investment company Doyen Sports.

This may mean that United have to up their offer to in excess of £20 million to keep all parties happy, although van Gaal seems to be determined to secure a deal for Rojo.

Seemingly keen to ensure that Rojo isn’t tempted by a move anywhere other than Old Trafford, the Dutchman reportedly rang Rojo to reassure him that he will do all he can to bring the player to Manchester.
