The future of the Portuguese at Old Trafford is unclear, with Nani himself having admitted upon his return from the World Cup that he could well switch clubs this summer.

Van Gaal did bring the winger off the bench dying the club’s opening day defeat to Swansea City, but it remains to be seen whether LVG still sees him in his long term plans as time rapidly runs out for him to re-establish himself in the club’s first team.

And now, according to reports in Portugal, Nani’s former club Sporting Lisbon have made contact with Manchester United, who are interested in bringing him back to the club where he started his career.

Nani rose through the ranks of Sporting’s youth sides to make his debut in 2005, where he made 76 appearances and scoring 11 goals before making the £25.5m move to Manchester United two years later.

After a strong start to his career at Old Trafford, he has become increasingly ineffectual for the club and Van Gaal recently earmarked him as one of the players that he has inherited for an exit.
