Young Liverpool centre back is set to spend a second successive season out on loan, report the Mirror, with the Portuguese player looking to continue his development with a loan spell at Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux.

Ilori, who was signed by Brendan Rodgers from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, spent last season on loan with Granada in La Liga and largely impressed with his performances for the club.

The 21 year-old is seen as a long-term member of the Liverpool defence by Rodgers, but is not going to be called back to Anfield just yet, despite the club’s particularly porous defence last season.

Bordeaux would represent another step up for Ilori, with the French side expectant of challenging for a place in the top six of Ligue 1 despite a frustrating few seasons for Les Girondins.

With the Reds having signed £20m man Dejan Lovren from Southampton this summer to strengthen the back line, it is easy to see why they felt comfortable in allowing Ilori to leave on a short-term basis – although it may indicate that Daniel Agger and Sebastian Coates will not be moving on during this transfer window.

Liverpool kick off their Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon when Southampton visit Anfield for a game that Brendan Rodgers’ men will be expected to win.
