Manchester United could sensationally switch their attention to signing former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid to solve their crisis in midfield, it has emerged.

The Red Devils have been tracking a number of big-name midfielders all summer after Louis van Gaal has identified that part of the pitch as a weak point in his squad, which was confirmed further in a shock 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Ander Herrera was brought in from Athletic Bilbao earlier this summer but gave a mixed display in the loss to the Swans, and it is well known that United have been chasing the likes of Arturo Vidal and Fredy Guarin in recent months, as well as missing out to Real Madrid for the signing of German World Cup winner Toni Kroos.

It is now the signing of Kroos that could push Alonso out of the Bernabeu exit this summer, with Liverpool recently linked with a bid to bring the Spaniard back to Anfield, though they now look to have switched their focus to the signing of Barcelona outcast Alex Song.

Alonso has been one of the best central midfield players in the world for much of his career, though he may now be past his peak at the age of 32, but his experience, defensive work rate and ability on the ball would still make him a big signing for United and a major improvement on the club’s current options in the middle of the park.

It is thought that van Gaal has instructed those above him at Old Trafford to try a £14m opening bid for Alonso after being angered by what he saw in his side’s defeat to Swansea, and it could be that that kind of offer will be good enough to persuade the Spanish giants to let him go.

Real are likely to offload some players before the end of the summer after spending heavily on the likes of Kroos and James Rodriguez, with the futures of Sami Khedira and Angel Di Maria also up in the air, with the latter also mentioned as a possible target for United.
