Manchester United may have to offer Nani on a season-long loan deal to Sporting Lisbon to have any hope of signing Argentine defender Marcos Rojo, according to the Times.

The Red Devils have been chasing the versatile 24-year-old for much of the summer as new manager Louis van Gaal has tried desperately to strengthen at the back, having seemingly missed out on other big-name targets such as Mats Hummels.

Rojo, capable of playing at centre-back or left-back, looks like a good option for United at this stage, with a 2-1 opening day defeat to Swansea City at Old Trafford highlighting the need for new signings for van Gaal’s side.

Rojo’s displays at the World Cup, helping Argentina to the final of the competition, saw him attract interest from a number of top clubs this summer, but he will only be allowed to leave if Sporting can land Nani on loan as part of the deal.

The Portuguese international has not been at his best for some time now and may be allowed to move on, though a lack of success in signing the likes of Angel Di Maria and Juan Cuadrado mean United are also short of options out wide at present.
