Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck will not be leaving Old Trafford during the transfer window, report the Mirror, despite reports of a potential £14m move to Hull City having broken over recent days.

Steve Bruce and the Tigers have cash burning a hole in their pockets following the £12m sale of Shane Long to Southampton, and it had been believed that Welbeck would be the target of former United defender Bruce’s advances.

Despite missing their opening day defeat at home to Swansea City through injury, however, Welbeck seems to be viewed as an important part of Louis van Gaal’s plans, with Mexican Javier Hernandez much more likely to be allowed to depart Old Trafford before the end of August.

Welbeck is likely to be back-up to first choice pairing of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, but the England international’s versatility means that he is likely to be a very useful part of van Gaal’s flexible 3-4-1-2 system.

Despite being far from a prolific goalscorer, Welbeck has established himself as a genuine first team player at Old Trafford since graduating from the club’s academy and spending a short period on loan in the Championship with Preston North End.
