Manchester United and Liverpool have received a huge boost in the transfer market, report the Express, with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid seemingly dropping their interest in signing German international Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund.

Reports this summer have suggested that Reus has a buy-out clause in his contract at Signal Iduna Park that is worth just £25 million, which would represent a bargain fee for one of the world’s most exciting and dynamic attacking players.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach player, who remains on the treatment table after picking up a serious injury in a pre-world cup friendly against Armenia, has been the subject of intense transfer speculation following the leak of the value of his release clause.

Atletico Madrid, however, are reported to have dropped out of the race to sign Reus, with Diego Simeone’s La Liga champions unwilling to splash out such a significant fee on one player as they look to replace the likes of Filipe Luis and Diego Costa, who have both joined Chelsea this summer.

This could pave the way for Manchester United and Liverpool, both of whom have also been linked with a move for Reus – although it would require a significant financial investment both in terms of the fee and wages, whilst United would have to persuade a world class performer to arrive with no guarantee of Champions League football.
