Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is set to step-up his push to bring in young Portuguese battler Wiliam Carvalho with Abola claiming the Blues will launch a big money bid for the 22 year old.

The young defensive midfielder had a superb season last term, helping Sporting Lisbon to a runners-up finish in the Primeira Liga, and was then part of Paulo Bento’s 2014 World Cup finals squad and may well be tempted by a move to Stamford Bridge.

The offer on the table is just shy of the player’s release clause and may be sufficient but one wonders why Mourinho would be ready to spend such a large sum on a relatively untested performer.

When you consider that Mourinho can call upon the likes of Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel as strong tackling central midfield options it seems that such an outlay is something of a risk.

Whilst it’s true that Chelsea sold David Luiz over the summer it’s not as though the Brazilian was a regular and as such spending near on £40m to sign a replacement seems a tad steep.
