Both Manchester United and Chelsea have received a timely transfer boost with the news that Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia missed training today, reigniting rumours of a potential move.

The 27-year-old Moroccan is revered as one of the best defenders in Europe, after his exploits last season helped his club finish second in Serie A and win an automatic place in this year’s Champions League.

However, the Daily Mirror believes that the club could be tempted to sell, especially if they receive an offer close to the £30m mark. With the player seemingly open to a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs, the Italian giants could determine that the money would be better reinvested elsewhere.

Manchester United and Chelsea have expressed an interest this summer. The Red Devils are desperate for defensive reinforcements, and are yet to replace either Nemanja Vidic or Rio Ferdinand, who both left earlier this summer. The Blues are comfortable with their current squad, but would jump at the chance to sign another world class player if the opportunity arose.

Bayern Munich have also been linked with the player, but according to recent reports have now turned their attentions towards Atletico Madrid star Diego Godin.
