Gonzalo Higuain could leave Napoli before the close of the summer transfer window, but only if the Italian side fail to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

Rafael Benitez’s side were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw in Naples last night by Athletic Bilbao, who now only need a goalless draw at home in order to progress from the tournament’s final round of qualifying.

It could have been a lot worse for the hosts, had Higuain not cancelled out Muniain’s opener. Later on, Jose Callejon and Higuain missed sitters and the latter also saw a close-range effort brilliantly stopped by Gorka Iraizoz as Napoli pressed in a frenetic ending – but could not secure the victory.

Speaking after the game, a dejected Higuain told Sky Italia: “The truth is I don’t feel like talking right now. We’ll have to prepare well for the next match. We have to go there to win and Napoli have to do it. We have the team to achieve this.”

The Argentine cut a frustrated figure at full-time, and if the second-leg result goes against his side next Tuesday, the World Cup star could yet be tempted into a move away from the club.

Higuain committed his future to Napoli earlier this summer, admit interest from Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. However, with the latter still on the lookout for a world class striker following Luis Suarez’s departure to Barcelona, the former Real Madrid man may still make the surprise switch to Anfield.

The 26-year-old is desperate to play Champions League football, which the Reds are guaranteed until at least Christmas after last year’s second place finish in the Premier League.
