Rodgers had been looking to bring in AS Monaco goal machine Radamel Falcao but the Merseyside club’s chances of pulling off such a move are now said to be fading fast.

The departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona has left Liverpool with a massive void to fill and the captures of Rickie Lambert and young Belgian Divock Origi, who was then immediately loaned back to Ligue 1 side Lille, are clearly not enough to make up for the loss of last season’s Premier League top-scorer.

Eto’o could prove a sensible short term option, especially with youngsters such as the aforementioned Origi and Serbian Lazar Markovic showing potential for the future, but it’s worth noting that the Cameroon international’s wage demands could prove a real obstacle.

Last term Eto’o bagged nine Premier League goals in 16 starts, including a hat-trick against Man United and efforts against Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal, and clearly the former Barcelona and Inter Milan has a pedigree and perhaps another season or two in the tank.
