Serie A giants Roma are prepared to offer Chelsea striker Fernando Torres an escape route from his Stamford Bridge nightmare, as part of a Blues’ swap deal for Mattia Destro.

According to The Times, Chelsea’s proposal is that they would sign Destro, an Italian international striker who is valued at around £20m, and allow Torres to move on loan to the Italian club for the season.

Torres has had a largely unhappy time since moving from Liverpool for £50m in 2011, scoring 20 goals in 110 league appearances after a brilliant spell at Anfield, and has fallen down the pecking order following several recent arrivals.

Destro, 23, is one of the most coveted young strikers in Europe, and would provided stiff competition for Diego Costa and Didier Drogba in Jose Mourinho’s team.

The former Genoa and Siena forward moved to the Italian capital in 2012, and has scored 19 league goals in 41 appearances since then. He has also also earned five caps for his country, scoring once against Malta. He was part of his nation’s initial 30-man World Cup squad, but was cut before the start of the tournament.
