The Gunners have been trailing the young Portugal international for some time, and reports that Arsene Wenger already hitting a roadblock in his pursuit of the player have surfaced in the paper.

The bid seems to have failed as Sporting are seeking a higher valuation on their prized asset, and by all accounts Arsenal will return with an improved offer before the transfer window closes in just under two weeks time.

Arsenal are now said to be desperate to add some more bodies to their midfield after it emerged that new captain Mikel Arteta suffered an ankle ligament injury earlier this week.

Carvalho has seen himself swiftly rise to become a world star recently and has been scouted by everybody from Arsenal, to arch-rivals Tottenham and Manchester United, who famously scouted him over ten times last season.

Sporting are open to cashing in on their latest star player, but want significantly more than the €25m Arsenal have offered.
