Arsenal are said to be monitoring the situation of West Ham United defender Winston Reid as he enters the final year of his contract, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 26-year-old New Zealand international has been an impressive performer for the Hammers in recent times, and has attracted some interest from the Gunners in the past, with Arsene Wenger seemingly a fan of his.

With Thomas Vermaelen leaving the club for a move to Barcelona earlier this summer, Wenger could do with signing one more player in defence as a backup to his current centre-back options of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

Summer signing and promising youngster Calum Chambers has filled that role well so far this season, though it could be that Arsenal see his future at right-back or in midfield, and a more experienced player to provide further squad depth would be ideal for the north London giants as they look to challenge for major honours this season.

Reid’s contract situation could mean he is available on a cut-price deal, though West Ham will no doubt be desperate to keep such an important player at Upton Park and avoid selling to one of their London rivals.
