Barcelona have reportedly failed with a shock bid to sign want-away Real Madrid winger and Manchester United target Angel Di Maria, according to Sport.

The Argentine wide-man has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu for much of this summer’s transfer window after falling behind new Galactico signing James Rodriguez in the pecking order, though a move to the Premier League looks most likely.

United have been Di Maria’s main suitors this summer and may still be in with a chance of signing him, while Ligue 1 big-spenders Paris Saint-Germain have also been strongly linked with him in recent months.

However, it has now been revealed that Real’s arch rivals Barcelona made a shock approach for the 26-year-old with a bid of around £48m, which was swiftly rejected by the Champions League winners.

The two clubs have sold to each other in the past, with Luis Figo perhaps the most notable player to move from one to another when he made the highly controversial switch from the Nou Camp to the Bernabeu back in 2000.

It remains to be seen if Barca will try again for the former Benfica star, though it would surely take a huge offer for Madrid to consider selling such a potentially top player to their biggest rivals.
