Premier League duo Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have seen their hopes of signing young Dutch forward Memphis Depay have been dealt a fatal blow, report the Mail, after the 20 year-old signed a contract extension with PSV Eindhoven that extends his spell in the Eredivisie to 2018.

Both sides have been linked with a move to sign the electric 20 year-old this summer after he impressed with his cameos for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands side at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with that coming off the back of a fine season for PSV in the Dutch league.

The extension is certainly a coup for PSV, with Depay having already scored five goals in three Eredivisie appearances this season as they look to maintain a genuine challenge to Ajax’s grip on the Dutch title.

Whilst the news may come as a blow to United fans who had been hoping that the Red Devils would make a move for one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers, the feeling at Old Trafford may well be that they are more in need of strengthening in defence and midfield after a frustrating opening day defeat to Swansea City.

Tottenham, meanwhile, continue to hunt a new forward, but their attention appears to be on Queens Park Rangers forward Loic Remy as Mauricio Pochettino hopes to strengthen.
