Manchester United could be set to make a surprise u-turn on their decision to pursue the signing of Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, according to the Daily Express.
Despite being told that the Argentine international wants to leave the Bernabeu this summer after falling out of favour due to the signing of James Rodriguez, United may pass up the chance to bring him to Old Trafford.
United’s new manager Louis van Gaal has previously hinted at a move for a top class wide-player, but it seems as though the Dutch tactician will now be focusing his efforts on signing more defensive players after bringing in Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.
There remain gaps to be filled at the back this summer after the departures of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and it could be that van Gaal will decide to stick with his current midfield options and instead look to bring in more signings at the back.
Big names such as Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and AS Roma star Mehdi Benatia have been linked with the Red Devils throughout the summer, while Thomas Vermaelen was also believed to be a target before he left Arsenal for Barcelona.
