The 21 year old Dutch international moved to Stamford Bridge in an £8m deal from Vitesse Arnhem last July and made four appearances in the first team before an anterior cruciate ligament injury ended his season and the arrivals of Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas in the past two transfer windows could see the exciting youngster struggle to retain a foothold in Jose Mourinho’s first team set-up.

Therefore a loan move may suit all parties though Mourinho may prefer to send the rangy midfielder to a Premier League side so as to give the player a grounding of experience in the English top tier.

Chelsea have amassed an expansive squad that contains a great many young talents and Mourinho must look to blood his starlets in a sensible fashion and as such the Blues boss must pick and choose which of his squad are ready to force their way into his first team plans and which are in need of a loan spell in 2014/15.
