Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal may have been concerned at the lack of transfer activity over the course of the past six weeks, having brought in Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw early in the summer transer window, but having completed the signing of Marcos Rojo and with the club’s Angel di Maria transfer almost in the bag it appears more additions are in the offing.

29 year old defensive midfielder de Jong is available for a small fee and his previous affiliation with Man City doesn’t appear to be an obstacle to his apparent likely move to Man United, where he will provide the club with some much needed steel.

Van Gaal doesn’t possess and out and out defensive midfield option, hence David Moyes looking to use Marouane Fellaini in a holding role last term, and clearly the AC Milan man is a player the former Dutch national team coach knows well.

Utility man Blind can play in a number of roles and can effectively act as a back-up to Luke Shaw at left-back as well and being able to play in a central midfield role and having won four successive Dutch Eredivisie titles one can see why the Amsterdam born 24 year old would be ready for a fresh challenge.
