Serie A duo Napoli and AC Milan are chasing the signing of outcast Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, report the Star, with his prospective move to Sunderland now looking dead in the water.
Borini spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light and his performances were integral to Gus Poyet’s side maintaining their Premier League status, with a future as a first team player at Anfield looking to be unlikely.
This will become even more pronounced should Liverpool be able to complete their £16m move to sign maverick Italian from AC Milan – although there is no suggestion that Borini would be included as part of the any deal to sign the former Manchester City man.
The former Chelsea youngster arrived at Liverpool from AS Roma, where his performances had been impressive enough to earn him a call-up to the Italy squad, with Rodgers being reunited with a player who was very successful playing under him during a loan with Swansea City.
Despite his industry and work rate, however, Borini failed to find the back of the net in a Red shirt and drifted lower down the pecking order as Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge came to the fore, before his temporary move to Wearside was confirmed.
