Liverpool have reportedly pulled out of a deal to sign former Chelsea and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o on a free transfer, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds are closing in on the signing of Mario Balotelli from AC Milan, with the Italian striker likely to be confirmed as the club’s latest summer signing on Monday.

This will seemingly end Liverpool’s interest in Eto’o, who had been eyed as a backup option to the former Manchester City star, but a decision to end their interest in the Cameroon international suggests that a move for Balotelli will now go through.

Eto’o spent last season with Chelsea but left at the end of his one-year contract, and he had been offered a similar deal by the Merseyside giants to remain in the Premier League for another year.

However, the 33-year-old will now have to look for another club as he makes a decision on his future, with Liverpool now having no need for him with Balotelli set to join Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert as Brendan Rodgers’ options upfront.

A new striker has been a priority for Rodgers this summer after star player Luis Suarez left for Barcelona in a £75m move.
