Arsenal are set to reignite their interest in Brazilian international defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo, report the Mirror, after their porous central area was exposed in the weekend’s 2-2 draw at Everton.

Despite their impressive comeback from two goals behind to claim a precious point at Goodison Park, the report suggests that Arsene Wenger is still in the market for a defensive midfielder, and his returned to Gustavo – a player he almost signed last summer before he moved to Bundesliga outfit Vfl Wolfsburg.

It was a lack of playing time that concerned Gustavo last summer, but an injury to Mikel Arteta, coupled with a lack of a specialist, first choice defensive midfielder, may mean that Wenger is able to promise the Brazilian more action this time around.

He would cost a hefty fee, however, with Wolfsburg having shelled out a significant sum to secure his services from Bayern Munich last summer, and the Brazilian being one of the wealthy Bundesliga side’s most important players.

Wenger reportedly sent scouts from the club to cast their eye over Gustavo in Wolfsburg’s opening day Bundesliga defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, in which he put in a solid performance in the centre of the park.
