The 26 year old Argentine international is set for a medical with the Old Trafford side this morning and a completed deal to bring in the former Benfica man would bring the club’s summer spending to a massive £132m.
Di Maria finished last season as Real Madrid’s leading assist maker, providing 22 assists in all competitions, but the arrival of Colombian World Cup hero James Rodriguez has seemingly acted as a death knell to his time at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid signed di Maria in a £36m deal back in 2010 following three successful seasons at Benfica and has been a consistent performer in the Spanish capital.
Carlo Ancelotti was indebted to di Maria as the wiry wide-man put in a Man of the Match display to help Real Madrid o defeat local rivals Atletico in last season’s Champions League final.
Louis van Gaal has already brought in Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo from Athletic Bilbao, Southampton and Sporting Lisbon respectively and will hope that further additions will get Man United’s season on course after their opening two fixtures against Swansea City and Sundeland secured just a single point.
