Benatia made it clear last week that he wanted to join Pep Guardiola & co at Bayern before the close of the summer transfer window.

Bayern chief Guardiola had identified the Moroccan international as the ideal man to fill the void left by Javi Martinez after he tore his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral knee ligaments, meaning he is likely to miss the majority of the season now.

However, it appears that the deal has now been scrapped after Roma bigwig Walter Sabatini called off a trip to Munich to discuss a deal to take him to Germany.

Roma are thought to be demanding somewhere in the region of £30m for his signature, but Bayern have only clubbed together £24m.

Sabatini and fellow director Mauro Baldissoni were in England last week and met with officials from both Arsenal and United as they attempt to cash-in on one of their prized assets.

Both United and Arsenal are keen on adding some new defensive talent to their ranks this summer and have been credited with a heavy interest in Benatia over the course of the previous campaign.
