Van Gaal’s prime target is £34m rated Juventus playmaker Arturo Vidal who continues to be a player Man United want despite the imminent arrival of di Maria.

The 27 year old Chilean has won three successive Serie A titles since moving to Turin but the departure of boss Antonio Conte could perhaps be motivation for a possible exit.

Man United are also set to launch an £18m bid for Ajax defender Daley Blind, with the versatile Dutchman perhaps an ideal addition to add further strength in depth in a number of roles.

The 24 year old can play at left-back, left wing-back, centre-back or as a defensive midfielder.

Man United have already brought in Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo though it’s perhaps unsurprising that van Gaal would look to make further signings after a very indifferent start to their Premier League campaign.
