Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino hopes to sign Barcelona midfielder Alex Song before the summer transfer window closes according to CalcioMercato.

The former Arsenal man has struggled to make an impact at the Nou Camp since moving to the La Liga side two years ago and could be on his way out, though Barcelona’s transfer ban could lead Luis Enrique to re-think the possibility of selling the Cameroon international.

Pochettino has been tracking a number of tough tackling midfielders and with efforts to land his former Southampton charge Morgan Schneiderlin seemingly derailed it appears that 26 year old Song is an alternative option.

Barcelona bought Song back in August 2012 but he has struggled to unseat Sergio Busquet for a defensive midfield role but has on occasion been used as a makeshift centre-back, a role that won’t be necessary in 2014/15 as Enrique has brought in Thomas Vermaelen and Jeremy Mathieu from Arsenal and Valencia respectively, to help support Spanish international Gerard Pique.

Song has a good grounding of Premier League experience from his seven seasons at the Emirates Stadium and one imagines Barcelona wouldn’t demand a huge sum for his services.
