Tottenham Hotspur will complete the signing of Sevilla centre-back Federico Fazio later today, after agreeing to pay the player’s £8m buyout clause late last night.
Reports in the Daily Mail confirmed that the 6ft 4in Argentinian will sign a four-year deal at White Hart Lane, and will replace departed captain Michael Dawson – who joined Hull City on Tuesday.
Tottenham have moved quickly to tie up a move for Fazio after a deal for Villareal defender Mateo Musacchio fell through over third-party ownership issues.
The cost of the deal will be mostly covered by the sale of Dawson, who reportedly cost Steve Bruce’s side around £6m.
Fazio, 27, joined Sevilla in 2007 after leaving local side Ferro Carril Oeste. He has since made 148 La Liga appearances, scoring 12 goals and winning two caps for his country.
He was part of the team that won the Europa League last season, as well as the Copa del Rey in 2010.
