Arsenal are set to accept an offer of £1.5 million for young defender Ignasi Miquel, report the Mail, with the Spaniard heading for Norwich City after failing to make the grade at the Emirates Stadium.

This opens the door for the Gunners to secure a new centre back before the closure of the transfer window, with teenager Calum Chambers now the only cover for Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, having only made the transition from full back in recent weeks.

Miquel had joined the Gunners in 2010 as a highly rated teenager and potential star of the future, but the Barcelona-born youngster made just five senior Premier League appearances under Arsene Wenger, as well as a further loan spell with Leicester City – then in the Championship.

Despite featuring in the pre-season Emirates Cup tournament, it has appeared for some time that Miquel has no future at Arsenal, with a move to Championship outfit Norwich City now looking to be the most likely outcome.

The Canaries were relegated from the Premier League last season but look well placed to bounce back at the first attempt, having made a strong start to their second tier campaign under the management of Neil Adams – with a £1.5m bid for Miquel having highlighted the ambition of the Norfolk club to make it back into the Premier League.
