Bookmakers have slashed the odds on Manchester United signing tough-tackling midfielder William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon, report the Express, as manager Louis van Gaal begins to look beyond Juventus star Arturo Vidal.

Carvalho is expected to move on from Sporting this summer having established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young central midfielders, despite the Lisbon club’s clear ambition in having attracted winger Nani to return to the club on loan from Manchester United.

Other major clubs, particularly Arsenal, have also been linked with a move for Carvalho – but the bookies now seem to believe that it will be United who secure yet another major signing in what has been a particularly expensive summer for the Red Devils.

The 22 year-old Angolan born powerhouse was on the periphery of the Portugal squad at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, but is seen as one of the young players expected to become a key part of their long term plans.

United, however, will feel that they need another new central midfielder to compliment Ander Herrera, big money signing from Athletic Bilbao, with the likes of Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley seriously struggling for form during what has been a particularly frustrating start to the season for van Gaal and his side.
