Arsenal are in talks with Borussia Dortmund over the possible signing of Greek centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, but want the club to lower their asking price for the player, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 26-year-old only moved to Dortmund last summer, but may find himself dropped to the bench this season as the likes of Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic return from lengthy spells out through injury, and this has alerted recent interest from Arsenal.

The Gunners are in the market for a new signing in defence after selling Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona in a £15m deal, and Sokratis is the latest to emerge as an ideal candidate for Arsene Wenger to provide more depth at the back.

Still, there is some disagreement over his transfer fee at the moment, with Dortmund demanding around £20m for the player, while Arsenal are only ready to pay closer to £12m.

With time running out for a deal to be struck, it may still be that Arsenal will look elsewhere for new signings to add to their back four, but Sokratis looks like one of the most realistic and affordable options for the north Londoners at the moment.
