Arsenal will provide late competition to Chelsea for the signature of Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy, after agreeing to meet the player’s £8.5m buyout clause.

Chelsea still believe that they will complete their deal for the player before Monday’s transfer deadline, as they seek a replacement for the departed Fernando Torres – who has joined AC Milan.

The Blues triggered the release fee in the Frenchman’s contract on Saturday, and began talks with Remy yesterday ahead of their evening game with Everton.

However, the Gunners will also have the opportunity to discuss personal terms, after agreeing to pay the clause in the 27-year-old’s contract that allows him to move to a team playing Champions League football.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea remain confident of getting their man, despite the dramatic late interest from their London rivals. But with no negotiations needing to take place over a transfer fee, Arsenal have been able to make quick progress on a potential deal.

Arsene Wenger has so far rebuffed media speculation that he is on the look-out for a new striker, following an injury to first-choice striker Olivier Giroud, but it seems like the Gunners could yet make a late move for a forward before the transfer window closes.
