Aston Villa are bracing themselves for a deadline day move from Manchester United for Dutch centre-back Ron Vlaar, a player that impressed for Louis van Gaal at the World Cup.

The Daily Star carries comments from Vlaar’s Villa teammate Andreas Weimann, who admitted that everyone at the club is desperate to see Monday come and go with their star man still with them.

Ahead of today’s clash with Hull, the Austrian ace said: “Ron is our captain and very important to the club. And everyone will be happy if he is still here after Monday.

“I watched all the Dutch games at the World Cup and he was brilliant – and in the first few games this season with us he has shown exactly the same form. That’s been so good to see. He was always our leader and captain.

“He’s always been vocal and the player we look up to in the changing room. But in terms of the performances he is now putting in here, there are definitely signs that he has grown in confidence even more since Brazil.”

Manchester United are in desperate need of a new central defender that would fit Van Gaal’s 3-5-2 system, and having missed out on Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, who joined Barcelona, the Star believes that he could turn to his compatriot.

Southampton are also interested in the player, as they seek a late replacement for Dejan Lovren – who joined Liverpool earlier this summer – and have already had two bid’s turned down.
