Reports in Italy claim that Manchester United are set to rival Liverpool’s interest in Argentina’s World Cup goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Multiple sources in the English press have suggested this morning that the player was set to seal a switch from Sampdoria to Anfield after the Reds agreed a £1.6m fee.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport believe that the Old Trafford club will match that offer before the transfer window slams shut on Monday evening.

Both clubs are chasing competition for their first choice goalkeepers – with neither David de Gea or Simon Mignolet under significant pressure to keep hold of their place in the team.

Romero, 27,  made 61 Serie A appearances between 2011 and 2013, but spent last season on loan at AS Monaco, playing just three league matches.

Nonetheless, he was selected to start for his national team in Brazil this summer, and impressed as he helped them reach the final of the competition.

Mino Raiola, the agent of Romero, who has 54 international caps in total, has reportedly arrived in England today to discuss his client’s transfer.

The Metro believes that Liverpool have stalled on the deal due to the player’s wage demands, but Raiola – who also represents Mario Balotelli – is hopeful of exploiting his good relationship with the Merseyside club and getting the deal done.
