Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on the signing of Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck after missing out on Loic Remy, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 23-year-old could complete a season-long loan move to White Hart Lane on deadline day after becoming Spurs’ main target to come in upfront, with Queens Park Rangers ace Remy looking set to make the move to Chelsea instead.

Tottenham have been keen to land a striker all summer, and now look like pouncing for Welbeck, who has been allowed to talk to a number of clubs about leaving United this summer due to falling out of favour under new manager Louis van Gaal.

Arsenal have also held talks with Welbeck, as have Bundesligsa side Schalke, though a move to Spurs now looks increasingly likely as Mauricio Pochettino looks set to make one more major signing before the summer transfer window slams shut.

With some unconvincing displays from the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado last season, Welbeck should prove a good addition to Pochettino’s squad as he looks to boost the club’s chances of making the Premier League top four in his first season in charge.
