Sunderland have had a busy transfer deadline day, with Inter Milan winger Ricky Alvarez quickly following Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates in joining the Wearside club on a season-long loan deal.

The 26 year-old, who was a surprise inclusion in Alejandro Sabella’s Argentina squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, arrives at the Stadium of Light from Serie A giants Inter Milan, where the former Velez Sarsfield winger had fallen out of favour under manager Walter Mazzarri.

Alvarez becomes Gus Poyet’s tenth summer signing as he looks to strengthen a Sunderland squad that came perilously close to relegation from the Premier League last season – and has also started the new campaign slowly, drawing their opening two games before a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Queens Park Rangers this weekend.

He made 90 Serie A appearances for Inter in three years after joining from Velez in his homeland, scoring 14 goals and impressing with his trickery out wide, although Alvarez has also regularly been criticised for a lack of consistent end product during his spell in Serie A.

He still has the potential to be an exciting signing for Sunderland, though, with the Black Cats potentially also keen on adding more new players to Poyet’s squad this evening, with less than four hours to go until the window slams shut.
