Newcastle United have entered the race to sign former Spurs striker Jermaine Defoe, Talksport reports.

QPR have also been linked with a move for Defoe due to the strikers close relationship with Hoops boss Harry Redknapp. However, Defoe also has a strong relationship with Magpies boss Alan Pardew and could be swayed into moving to St James’s Park.

Defoe is desperate to leave MLS side Toronto after the Canadian side dispensed with their manager Ryan Nelson, who played a big role in bringing the former England international to the MLS.

QPR appeared to be in pole position to sign Defoe with Redknapp looking to heavily strengthen his side on transfer deadline day.

However, Newcastle’s desire to bring Defoe to the North East could pose problems for Redknapp due to Defoe’s relationship with Pardew.

Pardew was Defoe’s boss at West Ham and the two reportedly struck up a good working relationship.

Defoe may not be the only new arrival at St James’s Park today. The Magpies are interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld on a season long loan however, the North East giants face competition for the Belgian’s signature from Southampton and local rivals Sunderland.
