Tottenham will look to lure Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez to White Hart Lane by offering winger Andros Townsend to the south-coast side in a part exchange deal according to the Independent.

Former boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen to reunite with his one time Saints charge as he seeks to beef up his striking options and can well afford to use England man Townsend as bait.

Rodriguez is still out with the cruciate ligament injury suffered in April and isn’t expected to be fit for action until October but nonetheless Pochettino wishes to bring in the former Burnley man to lead his Spurs attack.

His north London side drew a blank against Liverpool on the weekend and could perhaps do with further options up front with Spaniard Roberto Soldado proving a real flop since his £26m move to the club a year ago.

Rodriguez scored 17 goals in all competitions last term and but for his injury concerns would have almost certainly made it into Roy Hodgson’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

Ronald Koeman would be loathed to lose another of his star performers though Rodriguez may feel the time is right for a fresh challenge having seen team-mates Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren join Liverpool, Calum Chambers move to Arsenal and teenager Luke Shaw make a big money switch to Man United.
