Manchester United are looking to secure a £25 million deal for playmaker Kevin Strootman from AS Roma, report the Independent, but the deal would not go through until January due to the player’s current injury status at the Stadio Olimpico.

Strootman, who enjoyed a fine debut season with the Serie A runners-up before it was cruelly crutailed by a serious injury, is not expected to return for Roma until November – and it would be a risk for United to tie up a pricy deal before analysing how well the Dutchman returns from what is a serious fitness issue.

Van Gaal is known to be a huge fan of the PSV Eindhoven player, however, whilst the report suggests that Strootman himself is keen to move to Old Trafford, making the potential deal a real possibility – despite Roma manager Rudi Garcia slapping a £79m price on Strootman’s head.

Roma started their Serie A season in impressive form with a 2-0 victory over Fiorentina, despite missing a number of players through injury, and will be keen to know that they have Strootman ready to return as we head towards the new year, rather than tying up a deal to sell him to United, who themselves have more pressing concerns – but Louis van Gaal is more likely to focus on trimming his squad on deadline day.
