Lionel Messi, recognised by many as the greatest footballer of the modern generation, could refuse to participate in international friendly matches for Argentina, reports Spanish publication MARCA.

The Barcelona man led his side to the World Cup final in the summer, and despite starting the tournament well and winning the Golden Ball, awarded for tis best player, many were disappointed that he didn’t find his very best level when it truly mattered.

Now starring in La Liga with Los Cules, Messi could pull out of Argentina’s friendly matches until the Copa America starts in 2015.

Argentina are scheduled to play high-profile friendlies against Germany, Brazil and Hong Kong, but the mercurial attacker would prefer to rest himself from international duty until a proper tournament begins.

The news is apparently worrying the Argentine FA, who will miss out on revenue if their star attraction doesn’t play. Furthermore, the story will undoubtedly only maximise the occasioanl concerns over Messi’s commitment to his country.
