The Dutch boss has encouraged his Old Trafford chiefs to chase AC Milan battler Nigel de Jong but the San Siro made it abundantly clear the 29 year old was not for sale.

Man United had also moved to bring in Sporting Lisbon’s highly rated enforcer William Carvalho, with the Premier League side offering cash plus Brazilian midfielder Anderson but it’s a move that didn’t tempt the Primeira Liga side into selling their prized asset.

With a view to strengthening his defence Louis van Gaal also looked to land Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, who would perhaps have been an ideal acquisition to help fill the void left by the departures of veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, but Man United’s advances failed.

The club had looked to use Shinji Kagawa as part of the deal but it wasn’t a deal that led to the Bundesliga side selling their defensive rock though the Japanese playmaker did in the end complete his individual switch back to the Westfalenstadion.
