Schalke 04 director Horst Heldt has laughed off any suggestion that Arsenal were close to signing striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar on transfer deadline day.

It was suggested amongst a number of media outlets that the Gunners had made Huntelaar their main target when Olivier Giroud’s injury ruled him out until the New Year.

The Dutch striker would have been a like for like replacement for Giroud due to his size and statue, but Arsenal ended up signing Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck and not Huntelaar.

Heldt has stressed that the Gunners never made a move for the 31-year-old and also said that no other clubs were interested in him as the transfer window drew to a close.

“There was no approach from Arsenal or from any other club,” Heldt was quoted by Goal.

“Klaas-Jan is part of Schalke’s core. We can definitely see him sign a contract renewal here.

“He is a great player, an absolute modern professional. He’s always hungry for success and wants to achieve his goals.”

Huntelaar has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and could become available in January if he doesn’t sign a new contract with Schalke.

The striker struggled with injuries last season, making 18 Bundesliga appearances for the German club and scoring 12 goals.
