Robin van Persie has warned Manchester United’s newest signing Radamel Falcao, that he will have to fight for a place in the Red Devils starting XI, Sky Sports reports.

The arrival of the Colombian international dominated transfer deadline day. United paid AS Monaco £6 million to bring the striker to Manchester on a season long loan, bringing the Red Devils summer spending close to £150 million.

Most fans were over the moon at the arrival of such a world-class player and expect him to slot straight into the first team for United’s next game, at home to QPR.

However, van Persie insists that he has no intention of sliding down the pecking order following the 28-year-old’s arrival.

“I welcome his arrival, he makes us better,” said the Dutchman.

“At a top club you should always go for the best, which also fits my philosophy. Falcao must fight for his place, as I also have to. We must duke with Wayne Rooney and James Wilson to see who is playing.”

It was rumoured that one of the reasons that Falcao was brought to Old Trafford was that there were doubts over van Persie’s long term fitness, with reports suggesting he will need to undergo knee surgery before the seasons ends.

However, the 31-year-old also quashed that suggestion.

“I am impressed that people can pick up the imagination to invent something like that,” van Persie added.

“I do not know where it comes from and can say with my hand on my heart that I won’t be in a hospital to have the operation.”
