Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel thinks Wayne Rooney will play a major role in keeping the clubs culture alive, Manchester Evening News reports.

The Red Devils embarked on huge change this summer, spending £150 million on new, expensive signings like Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

While United brought in many star names, they also sold several players that had come up through the clubs youth system like Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley.

That has led to some fans and pundits suggesting that the club were losing their heart and their will to produce players of the calibre of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Schmeichel thinks that Rooney, who was recently installed as club captain, has become the most important player in United’s history and has backed him to show the Red Devils new stars the ”United way”.

“The summer buys are exciting but in terms of numbers it is also a lot of players. They are all new and they don’t have the Manchester United values in them,” Peter told MEN Sport.

“To have that culture is very important. It would really be a shame if the culture of Manchester United dies because there is nobody to carry it on.

“That is why Wayne Rooney is going to be hugely important. When those new players look around the dressing room they will only see Wayne with true Manchester United in him. From Wayne’s role being important it has now gone to super important. By being the most important at this moment makes him the most important United player in history for me.”
