The Gunners made an approach to the Scottish champions regarding the 23-year-old’s ability on transfer deadline day, but a proposed transfer could not be thrashed out in time – with the Gunners instead focussing on concluding the £16m Danny Welbeck deal.

van Dijk is 23-years-old, and stands at a mighty 6 ft. 4″, priding himself on his immense physical stature and associated power…

With only converted right-back Calum Chmabers to cover for Laurent Koscileny and Per Mertesacker, the Gunners were expected to bring in a backup centre-back during the transfer window, and were also interested in Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar and Manchester City’s Matija Nastasic.

However, no deals could be agreed, and van Dijk, whose reputation is growing, could be the primary target come 2015.

Queens Park Rangers central defender Rio Ferdinand has raved about the uncapped Dutchman.

“He is cool, calm and collected in defence. Virgil always appears relaxed and it looks as if there is another gear in there,” said the former England skipper.

“His time for moving will definitely come at some point but look, he’s in the Holland squad this week while playing for Celtic, so it can’t be too bad for him.”
