Serie A champions weighing up move for former Chelsea man.

Serie A champions Juventus are considering a January swoop for playmaker Juan Mata from Manchester United, report the Mirror, with doubts having surfaced over the Spanish international’s future at Old Trafford due to the club’s late window signings of Radamel Falcao and Angel di Maria.

Mata was United’s big signing in the last January transfer window but, despite the odd impressive performance, both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal have thus far struggled to bring the best out of the former Valencia man within their respective systems.

The signing of Angel di Maria and Falcao given van Gaal even more options, with the Argentine dribbler in particular being a genuine threat to Mata’s place in the team, particularly if van Gaal persists with the 3-4-1-2 system that only allows room for one genuine number ten.

The Spanish international has been criticised for a lack of pace and mobility since arriving at United, meaning that flying winger di Maria offers the opposite skill-set – and may soon be favoured by van Gaal.

This could open up the possibility of a swoop from Juventus, with new manager Massimiliano Allegri likely to want to strengthen his squad after six months of assessing what he has inherited from Antonio Conte in Turin, with Mata now emerging as an early contender to be one of his first signings as manager of Italy’s leading club.
