Manchester United are already preparing for more big spending when the transfer window opens again in January, according to reports in the Times.

The Red Devils invested heavily in new players this summer, spending around £150m on some big-name arrivals such as Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind.

The United board have been keen for new manager Louis van Gaal to access plenty of transfer funds to improve on the squad that finished in 7th place in the Premier League last season, and it now looks as though the spending is set to continue in the winter with two more big names being targeted.

In deals that could take the club’s spending to a total of £200m for the season, here are the two players in van Gaal’s sights for January, with midfield and defence still seen as in need of improvement:

1) Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

A player valued roughly at £20m, Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels is undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in the world at the moment and one who would greatly improve this current United backline. The Red Devils have struggled defensively so far this season after losing two experienced names in Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and with some adaptation needed after van Gaal’s preference for playing three at the back. Hummels is a good enough player to come in and adapt straight away, and he certainly looks like he’d be money well spent this January. Linked with a £20m move to Old Trafford this summer, it could now be that he will become a United player later this season.
