The Argentine international joined the club last summer from Serie A giants Roma in a deal worth around £30m, but he struggled for game time and thus failed to make an impact during his first season in the Premier League.

However, the club have sought to stand by him and have seen just a few glimpses of his ability that prompted them to splash the cash 13 months ago.

“Last season I suffered a lot. I’m fine now and you can see the results.

“Tottenham waited and encouraged me and now I want to make it in the Premier League.

“I’m not yet at the top, but I’m on the right path. I have so many debts to repay.”

The Argentine has enjoyed a first few games of the current season and signs look promising that he will start to repay the faith and the fee over the coming months.
