Van Gaal is ready to make a move for £40m rated AS Roma midfield maestro Kevin Strootman, who will have recovered from his long term injury lay-off by the time the transfer window re-opens.

The 24 year old’s knee injury was seemingly a factor that caused van Gaal to hold off on making a move for the former PSV Eindhoven man over the summer but once fully fit the box to box performer will be back on the Old Trafford radar.

Van Gaal will also look to land Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Christoph Kramer, who could be available ‘on the cheap’ as his contract will expire next summer.

The 23 year old started the World Cup final, before being subbed after being knocked unconscious, and is into the second season of his loan deal at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Man United signed Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao during what proved to be an expensive summer of transfer activity that the Premier League side will hope secure, at the very least, a Champions League berth for 2014/15.
