The former Reds striker, who was speaking to the club’s official website, praised the summer transfer activity at Anfield, which saw nine new players come into the squad.

“Full credit to the management and everyone involved in the recruitment process, we’ve gone out and signed players who can fight for positions all over the pitch,” he said.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers signed Southampton trio Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren, as well as full-backs Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno, midfielder Emre Can, winger Lazar Markovic, and striker Mario Balotelli. Beligan forward Divock Origi was also acquired, but he has returned to former club Lille on loan.

“You’ve got the full-backs, the centre-halves, all fighting for places. Nobody is really guaranteed a place, and that’s the way it should be,” Fowler explained. “Of course, we all sort of know what our best first XI is, but there are a lot of players who can come in and impress, and who will be hungry to do so as well.”

The Reds have started the season strongly with Premier League victories over Southampton and Tottenham, while a defeat against Premier League champions Manchester City was not as one-sided as the scoreline suggested.

Fowler added: “The team is great, and you know now that if you get injuries or suspensions in the first XI, there are people who you would feel comfortable bringing in. That’s the result of a very good summer in the transfer market.”

Liverpool’s next game is next Saturday, when they host unbeaten Aston Villa at Anfield.
